I saw in a magazine a suggestion that in order to lose weight that you should eat 4 grams of fiber at every meal. It also said that you should eat 6 times a day so you get 24 grams of fiber daily. This seemed to me like just another gimmicky “lose weight easily” article but I decided to incorporate the idea of eating more fiber. I figured it would fill me up at least.
What I didn’t forsee was the mindfulness it brings to eating. If you are trying to get 4 grams of fiber at a meal you really have to think about it. There’s no just grabbing whatever junk food you see. I’ve been eating sandwiches on whole grain bread and foods that incorporate apples or celery. I’ve been eating Raisin Bran too. I feel like I’ve been eating a lot. I didn’t think to weigh myself before I started this but I weighed myself this morning and was a few pounds less than I would have guessed so maybe it is working. It also helps that I’ve been getting up and doing yoga at 7:30 every morning. That’s when Yoga Zone comes on LimeTv.
Here’s a recipe that I adapted from one on one of the vegetarian lists on Yahoo.
Pintos and Cheese
2 cans of pinto beans, drained
2 – 4 oz of fat free cream cheese
1/2 – 1 cup plain yogurt
1/2 cup shredded cheese of your choice
Heat the bean through and then add the cheeses and yogurt. The recipe called for the higher amount but I thought it was a bit too soupy so if I make it again I’ll use the lower amount. The recipe then suggested layering tomatoes and zucchini over this in a casserole and topping with cornbread. I used the beans by themselves as a sidedish.
I think perhaps the weight loss that comes is with people who lack the fiber in their diets, the standard american diet is so lacking in adequate fiber that I wonder if part of the weight “loss” comes from the fiber pushing out all the backed stuff..lol
I found All-Bran has an extra-fiber cereal that has a whopping 13g of fiber per 1/2c. serving. I don’t measure out 1/2 cup so I imagine I’m getting more with each serving. Even more if I add fresh fruit. yum.
