There are constantly articles and panic pieces coming out about how no one reads any more. I feel like I’ve been reading stories like this for my entire life. At this rate, you’d think that books would just be relics that live in museums under glass. But here we still are, reading. (And reading about it on a blog – that other totally dead medium!) It makes me wonder if we are truly outliers or if more people are out here not talking to journalists because they are too busy reading.

I realize that those of us who are the hardcore super-reading nerds are probably skewing the curve. I also know that my ex-husband was proud of the fact that he hadn’t read a book since Island of the Blue Dolphins in the fourth grade. So there are extremes on both ends. But when I look around the people I see regularly I was surprised by how many readers there are.

My mom reads and listens to audiobooks. She likes mysteries.

The husband reads mostly nonfiction that I buy for him. He listens to audiobooks too. I’m his book dealer. I put things in front of him that he would like. But then, he tends to buy copies of the ones that he really likes and sends them to some other people, like his ex-mother-in-law, his sister, or a former work colleague. They think he has wonderful taste in books.

There are some people at the dog park who talk about the books that they are reading.

I work with 7 people and 3 of them are readers and 1 is starting to get into reading.

Maybe we really aren’t all alone out here and the sky isn’t falling.

Do the people around you read or are you the weird one?
