The Eat Local Challenge for 2006 will be in May. Last year it was in August and was a very educational experience for me. I learned a lot about what food is grown in my area.
But May is a very different growing season here than August. I found a handy chart that tells me what grows here in May – Asparagus, broccoli (yuck!), greens, herbs, lettuce, peas, radishes, and possibly rhubarb. Not a great basis for a full menu.
In the next week or so Jen from Life Begins at 30 will be starting a new Eat Local blog. Stay tuned for updates.
I’m not sure if they have it in your area or not, but often here food is labeled with where it’s from and often advertised as local. Even McDonalds, which I don’t eat at, will advertise using our local cheese company for one of their sandwhiches. Though, that may be a necessity here for them to stay in business since many people choose what they buy based on how local it is.
