House of Secrets by Richard Hawke – Senator Andy Foster is having an affair. Someone found out about it and arranged to have camera in the house that he is using in order to blackmail him. But they get more than they bargain for when an unidentified man breaks in, kills the woman, and leaves the man unconscious. When Andy wakes up he sees that his partner is dead and then leaves without calling the police. The blackmailers have it all on tape.

Andy is on the shortlist to replace the resigning vice-president. The blackmailers are fighting amongst themselves. On the surface this seems to be a typical political thriller. I almost put it down because it seemed so clear where this story was going to go. Then in the middle it took a turn that I didn’t see coming. From there it was a page turner. I did manage to figure out who was behind it all a few pages before it was revealed but the why was complex and interesting.

Bitten by Kelley Armstrong – This is the first of a series. Elena is the only female werewolf in existence. She was bitten and turned against her will ten years ago. Last year she left her secluded pack to try to live a normal human life. It isn’t working well. She is called back to rural New York by an unusual attack on her tribe and needs to work through her anger at the werewolf who turned her.

I thought this was pretty good. I’ll probably read another one of this series.

Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore – This is a reread in honor of Christmas, of course! As a kid I always wondered what it was like to be friends with Jesus when he was such a goody-goody. This answers that question. Biff is reanimated in modern times to write a more complete gospel. He is being babysat in a hotel by an angel until he gets done. He is the only person who was there with Joshua from the time they were six years old. That includes all the “lost years” that are unaccounted for in the gospels.

I love this book! It is hysterical yet oddly… possible. It is blasphemy by definition but not disrespectful which is a hard line to walk.
