The prompt for SciFiMonth today is One Way Ticket. I immediately thought of death as the ultimate one way ticket. But then I read a bunch of stories in the last few weeks were death turned out not to be a one way ticket at all.
Uploading consciousness has been explored a lot in science fiction. In Yours Celestially a company is storing consciousnesses after death until bodies can be built for them to be downloaded into. An AI program called Metratron takes care of them during their limbo. Of course things start to go haywire. I’ll be reviewing this one soon so stayed tuned for that.
What if you can watch what happens in the aftermath of your death and see its impact on your family and friends? What if you get a few chances to affect the outcome? That’s the set up of Grief in the Fourth Dimension, an amazing YA sci-fi novel that I recently finished. The review will also be coming up. This one was awesome. You should read it.
A courtesan in a futuristic/dystopian city wakes up at her funeral after she was murdered by a client. The rest of the courtesans take her home and aren’t sure what to do with her. She knows what she wants though. She starts to take revenge on the rich men who have wronged them. (How or why she resurrected was never explained. We are just going with avenging zombie queen here and I’m fine with that.) The story is told through the eyes of her friend who is still in the house. She wants to help but she also needs her job. Honestly, I picked up this audiobook from the library because it was available and it was only 3 hours long. It was a fun revenge novella though and look at that gorgeous cover!
I also recommend the TV show Upload that is about people uploading their consciousness after death.
I love your take on this. Yours Celestially sounds really interesting.

Death would be a one-way ticket to this life but does not necessarily negate a different life. I believe I watched a movie similar to Yours Celestially not too long ago but I’m horrible at remembering movie names. I love stories with courtesan’s in them. They are always misunderstood.
