I have a thing for turtles and tortoises. One of the things I was looking forward to on our Hawaii vacation was seeing sea turtles. As the first few days went by I got to see video of the sea turtle that my uncle’s partner saw. My parents and brother’s family saw three sea turtles swimming at the beach. I was getting very turtle jealous.
I was holding out hope for Punaluu. This is a black sand beach known for turtles. As I drove in I told everyone that there had best be turtles or I was going to get grumpy.
The turtle gods were listening because there were two turtles!
There was awake watery turtle
And there was sleepy sandy turtle
This is why I buy cameras with super zoom so I can get wildlife pictures without getting in their faces. You aren’t allowed to touch the turtles. There are signs placed by the turtles when they come on shore. See, I’m outside the legal limit.
The next day we went to Hapuna which is a great white sandy beach. It is crap for snorkeling. I was trying to snorkel but there was nothing to see. I just my stuff back on the beach and was sitting in about 6 inches of water slightly pouty faced. A little kid started pointing at me. I thought, “Well great, now there is an obnoxious kid too.”
Then I realized that she was pointing in front of me. There was a large sea turtle passing between us just minding her own business.
Was the sea turtle about to lay eggs or in the process of laying eggs? Such amazing pictures, I’m jealous!
What fun! A few years back when we went to Hawaii I was swimming around at the beach and stopped in deeper water to stand on a rock for a minute and look around. And then I realized I was standing on a turtle, not a rock. Oops!
