We finished the renovation of our completely trashed rental house. We did the walk through with the new tenants. They are moving in on May 1. I work with one of the people moving in. I have been flat out threatening her as we went through the renovation about what I will do to her if I ever have to do this level of repair because of her. Everything I threatened was highly illegal but creative (and really that’s the important thing). This is their first grown up house and they are so excited. Her boyfriend even hugged me in excitement after the security deposit hit my husband’s venmo account.
This week on the blog:
It’s Monday! What are you reading?
Unpopular Bookish Opinions – Which turned out to be actually popular
My cruise stop for snorkeling in Belize – Was it worth it?
The Filling Station – review. Historical fiction about the aftermath of the Tulsa Race Massacre

That is a landlords nightmare right there! Hopefully your next tenants are much better!
Hope you have a great week.
Shame on people for making such a mess. I hope that never happens again.
Okay, now I’m curious to see what your unpopular/popular book opinions are. I skipped this prompt.
Oh my god, the before pictures are insaaaaane
Ohmygosh that kitchen is the CUTEST!!! Why would anyone disrespect it like that??? I love the blue color.
Oh my gosh, your poor rental house! That looks like quite the chore to get cleaned up. Glad you were able to make it beautiful again.
Is being a landlord worth it if people are going to destroy your house? I’m glad you got it looking so nice again. Here’s my Easter SP: https://bonniereadsandwrites.com/2025/04/20/sunday-post-happy-easter-and-an-easter-poem-from-louisebelanger/
Not at all! LOL. Right now we are only enjoying the tax write off.
What the heck? Why would anyone EVER move out of a rental and leave it like that? I hope you charged them a big security deposit and didn’t give it back.
She ghosted us so we couldn’t give her the security deposit back if we wanted to – which we absolutely don’t. It didn’t even begin to cover the damage.
My mom and dad had a rental property and they put in new hardwood floors. When the first family that rented it moved out, my parents went in to clean so they could rent it again. The people had painted the hardwood with black paint.
Sorry you had to deal with that!
Our book group read Fire in Beulah by Rilla Askew several years ago. That was where we all learned about the Tulsa Race Massacre — even though one of our members grew up in Oklahoma. It’s embarrassing to learn something that late in life that should have been taught in our history classes.
I think I might like the story in The Filling Station better as a way of processing the events.
