Let’s be clear. I can read under just about any conditions. But I do have my preferred situations.

Seating

I love it when people on home renovation shows always want to add a window seat “for reading” and they end up looking as uncomfortable as this.

Who wants to sit there for any period of time? I prefer to read while laying down. My favorite is reading while in bed. This can happen at any time of day. If I want to read for a while, I go lie in bed. My second favorite would be laying in my hammock in good weather. It is important to be comfortable.

I’ve often thought about making up a nice reading area but every time I realize that I already own a bed.

Noise

I like it to be quiet in my world. I’m not a person who needs there to be background noise. In fact if it is too loud because other people exist in the world, I may put my ear buds in just to block some of the noise. I think that I have the hearing of a bat and I live with a person who is partially deaf, so I end up doing that often.

If I really need to block out the outside world, I may put on some ambient noise. My favorite is from Miracle Forest. I usually like anything with water sounds but for some reason another favorite one for reading is the squeaky ghost.

Snacks

I see lots of people talking about how they get comfy with drinks and snacks when they settle in to read. I’m just going to come out and say it. I don’t snack when I read.

Now, I read when I eat but that is totally different. What I mean by that is that when I have a meal I am also reading a book. But when my main activity is reading, I don’t need food or a drink to accompany it. Is that weird? I don’t really snack in general, I guess.

Do you agree or are you the kind of person who would rather go to a cafe on purpose to read while sitting at a table in the presence of humans while having a coffee and a pumpkin muffin?
