I read 204 books in 2023. The vast majority of them took place in the United States. Where were the rest of them from?
There are a few ways to interpret that. Let’s look at where the books were set.
That not a great range – especially when I’ve been trying to focus on increasing my selections from South of the Equator. But, on the bright side, hello Uganda and South Africa! I also increased my Australian reading. That number doesn’t include books by Australian and New Zealand writers whose books were set in North America or England. I had several of those.
Like always I want to increase my South America reading. I read a bit more out of Africa than it appears but they tended to be set in outer space or fantasy lands.
I MUST become more purposeful about selecting books from other parts of the world. I am reading The Covenant of Water right now. It is set in India and I am delighting in all the cultural references I know little or nothing about. If I did this type of activity I would become more conscious of making selections that open up the world to me more. Thank you.
Let’s discuss ranking books
Love how detailed you are about your tracking!
I really enjoy reading books set outside the US and by non-US authors. I hit 46 countries this year (though I do count countries even if they aren’t the main location in a book).
