Every year I like to review the authors that I read. I know that I read mostly female authors and that those female authors end up being mostly white. That’s especially true if I’m not paying any attention. I have been trying to expand my reading horizons over the years and I still end up with mostly white authors. That shows me that it is important to remain intentional about seeking out authors who have different perspectives than I do.

I get the information for this review from a very surface-level look at the author’s bio. If they don’t mention their race in their Goodreads or book bio then I’m not deep diving into their lives. This is just to give me an idea how I am doing on reading diversely. I may be wrong on some of the authors based on my own incorrect assumptions.

I only listed each other once. It didn’t matter if I read one book by them this year or ten. They count once.

I also know that I read one nonbinary author and two trans men authors. All three were white.

Women

The small purple bar there is Indigenous with 1 author and the red 2 is for unknown race.

Ok, not surprised by the percentage of white women. I am disturbed by how few Black women I read this year. Three? Really? That’s bad. I need to up that.

Men

The yellow bar is for unknown. I guess it is fitting that it refuses to put that label on the graph.

Again, overwhelmingly white. I’m actually surprised that I read this many men at all. I usually don’t.

Do you track the race of the authors that you read? Do you feel like to helps you get a greater variety in your reading?
